MoJ May Soon Administer Justice from Leeds
With Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Bristol already in the MoJ list of preferred cities where it can base its new regional HQ, another city has been added as a potential host the West Yorkshire city of Leeds. Two thousand new jobs will be generated for the host city by the MoJ, and it will require ample office space to accommodate more than 3,000 employees who will work in what is one of the largest government departments in the
The MoJ would require a new 250,000 square feet shared office building to base its regional HQ. A lot of factors need to be taken into account like the availability of such a building (or that of an area in which such a building could be erected), funds involved in the purchase, and strategic location of the place, before the MoJ takes its final decision regarding the host city.
Leeds development and regeneration executive member Councillor Carter is determined to promote his city as a future destination for business and other organizations, and as one that has remained mostly untouched by the current economic woes. Deputy Leader of the Leeds City Council said recently that Leeds is eagerly expecting the MoJ to set up its HQ and that it is doing everything it can to turn the tide in its favour.
The MoJ is one of the largest wings of the UK government and would require at least 85,000 square feet to start functioning in the chosen city, with further expansion that is slated to be complete by 2013. The government has undertaken a large-scale relocation programme, with several of its departments likely to move out of London to other cities for economic reasons, the MoJ being one of them.
