Initiative to Improve Employee Fitness at Nestlé UK
A healthy workplace is synonymous to productive business. In a tough economic scenario, every organisation is looking to improve productivity levels and efficiency and introduction of technology such as the internet does not help maintain health levels.
In a bid to encourage their employees to lead healthier lifestyles, Paul Grimwood, CEO of Nestlé UK, has challenged his employees to walk at least 14000 steps a day. Use of stairs instead of the lift and holding walking meetings is the order of the day for the 5000+ workforce.
Nestlé UK team is the current holder of the title ‘Most active global company in the world’ which was conferred upon them last year as part of GCC Walking challenge which is held every year.
The global corporate challenge (GCC) is a corporate health program, which challenges the participants to walk minimum 10,000 steps per day. The entire program lasts for 125 days. Each participant has to track his daily step count with the help of a pedometer, which is then logged on to the GCC website.
Though the target is individual, GCC is a team event. Teams consisting of 7 participants each, from organisation around the world are taking part in the event. The challenge being a team program brings about camaraderie and motivation among the participants, needed to induce a positive habitual change to achieve the target. The program is easy, fun and excellent for staff morale. To promote a positive health and safety culture in your workplace environment a NEBOSH course for the management of health and safety could be just what your organisation needs. A whopping 255 teams from Nestlé UK will be participating in this year’s challenge among 800+ worldwide teams, which have registered for the challenge. With their CEO leading his team’s challenge, the UK division of Nestlé seems to be the team to beat this year too.
